Malick
Malick Welli is a Senegalese visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker based between Dakar and Paris.
Through a multidisciplinary practice, he explores themes of duality, spirituality, history, and the restitution of memory, offering a nuanced reflection on identity, belonging, and displacement.
His work, often marked by mysticism and deep introspection, navigates the complex intersections of religion, material culture, economic dynamics, and power structures, questioning their impact on contemporary narratives and social perceptions.
Welli’s work has been exhibited at major international art fairs including 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech and New York, EXPO CHICAGO, USA, and Art X Lagos. He has also exhibited in renowned institutions and cultural events such as the Gallery 19M of Chanel in Aubervilliers, Paris, the Wereldmuseum in Leiden, Netherlands, the Chazen Museum of Art in Wisconsin, USA, and Express Newark at Rutgers University, USA, as well as significant biennales such as the Cairo Biennale and the Dakar Biennale.
His films have been screened at Off the Wall 725 Ponce in Atlanta, Colgate University, the BlackStar Film Festival, Express Newark, Rutgers University, and other international film festivals and cultural platforms.
In addition to his exhibitions and film work, Welli has collaborated with international publications such as Revue Traces, Monocle, AramcoWorld, and Forbes. His work has appeared in numerous international magazines and newspapers and is featured in the book Africa: The Fashion Continent.
He is also the co-founder of the artist residency Malidoma Popenguine in Senegal.
